Exposure To Hazardous Substances

Substances that can be hazardous to health are defined as any substance that creates a potential hazard when working under the instruction of an employer. This may include substances listed in the CHIP 2 Regulations 1994 and which the classification is specified as toxic, very toxic, harmful, corrosive or irritant. Exposure to hazardous substances is the responsibility of the employer and you have a duty to ensure that your workplace remains safe for all staff at all times.

Under regulation 6 of The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002 and employer is required to assess the risks to health posed in the workplace where chemicals or other known substances fall into the hazardous categories and those ventilation systems that control substances must be tested every 14 months. An assessment of exposure to hazardous substances is therefore vital to give the employer information on whether activities involving chemicals are likely to result in staff being exposed to significant levels of potentially dangerous substances. Steps can then be taken to minimize the risk potential to fall into line with current guidelines and legislations.
